Grimm Brothers -
Their own story!
Jacob Ludwig Carl was
the eldest of the Grimm Brothers being born on January 4, 1785. His
brother Wilhelm Carl was born February 24, 1786. The brothers
came from a wealthy family of nine children and their parents were Philipp Wilhelm Grimm (a lawyer) and Dorothea Grimm, née Zimmer. The
family came from Hanau in Germany. The brothers followed in
their father's footsteps (1802 &1803) and studied Law at the
University of Marburg. In 1812 the Grimm brothers publish volume one
of Children' and Household Tales a book containing 86 folktales.
Volume two followed two years later in 1814 with another 70 stories
from German Folklore. Two more books follow containing further
collections of another 585 German legends from Folklore. In 1825
Wilhelm married Henriette Dorothea Wild, Jacob remained
unmarried. They both worked at the University of Gottingen and then
the University of Berlin between 1842 and 1852. Wilhelm died
on December 16, 1859, at the age of 73 and Jacob died on
September 20, 1863, at the age of 78. Their folk stories became the
best known and most influential book in the German language.
The Wonderful
World Of The Brothers Grimm - the Movie
In 1962 the work of Jacob and
Wilhelm was celebrated in the MGM movie which was based on the book
"The Brothers Grimm". The Director was George Pal and the
movie starred Laurence Harvey as Wilhelm Grimm, Karl Boehm as Jacob
Grimm and Russ Tamblyn as Tom Thumb (who had previously starred in
the Tom Thumb movie in 1958, also directed by George Pal!)
